Savannah was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1971, where her father's work had taken the family. When they relocated to the U.S. in 1975, she was just a toddler. Her parents chose Tucson — and this house — and that was that.

The one-story home became the setting for everything: Sunday services at Casas Adobes Baptist Church, kite-flying afternoons with her father, and the kind of rooted, unhurried family life Savannah still speaks about with pride.

She would go on to attend the University of Arizona before becoming one of America's most recognizable TV anchors. But the Catalina Foothills home always remained her starting point and Nancy never left it.

Originally built in 1969, the home sits on a full acre of arid Sonoran Desert land in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood. It measures 3,776 square feet, with five bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms.

The Guthrie family paid $85,000 for it. According to current property records, it is now valued at close to $1.1 million — a figure that reflects both the home's size and the exclusivity of its surroundings.

She Almost Sold It, Then Changed Her Mind

Property records show Nancy listed the home in 2007 at $950,000, then lowered the asking price to $875,000 by that summer. By October of that year, it was off the market entirely.

She stayed. The house stayed. For nearly 50 years, through loss and change and the quiet passing of time, it remained the one place the Guthrie family always came back to.

A Home Built on Faith and Family

The Guthrie family's life in that house was deeply shaped by faith. On Sundays, the whole family would spend the entire day at Casas Adobes Baptist Church — Sunday school, morning service, choir practice, and night service.

As Savannah later recalled, "Faith was so woven into our daily lives, we liked to say that God was the sixth member of the Guthrie family."

Her father, Charles, was the kind of man people gravitated toward. Savannah described him as "a 5,000-watt bulb who could turn a mundane trip to the post office into a rip-roaring tale."

He was tall, funny, and fiercely principled — a man with, in Savannah's words, "an unbending notion of right and wrong."

One ordinary afternoon, he met Savannah at the door after school with four words: "Let's go fly a kite!" They spent the rest of the day running through a field, the kite soaring high above them.

The Loss That Changed Everything

Then, two days after her sister's high school graduation in 1988, Charles Guthrie died suddenly of a heart attack. Savannah was 16. The family lost him without warning, and the home that had held so much joy now held grief too.

Nancy went to work to support the family. Each evening when she came home, Savannah recalled, "it was all I could do not to cling to her like a little girl, as if to make sure I wouldn't lose her too." The house, and Nancy's presence in it, became something Savannah held onto fiercely.

The Best Part About Tucson

Just months before the abduction, in November 2025, Savannah returned to Tucson for a "Today" segment, visiting the city she grew up in, with her mother and older sister, Annie, beside her.

She was candid about what the trip meant to her: "I'm emotional about it. I'm very proud of Tucson. I think it's an absolutely stunning and unique place to be from, and I'm really proud of it, so this has just been a joy."

The three had lunch at El Charro, a beloved local Mexican restaurant, and the mood was warm and celebratory. On camera, Savannah asked Nancy what had made her stay in Tucson for so many years. Nancy's answer was simple and full of affection:

"It's so wonderful. The air. The quality of life. It's laid back and gentle. I like to watch the havalinas and eat my plants."

"We believe now, after we process that crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime, and we're asking the community's help."
