Another Rare Public Appearance by Katherine Jackson

Katherine was also seen publicly supporting her family during another rare outing in late 2024.

According to The Sun, the Jackson family matriarch attended Janet Jackson's Las Vegas residency launch at Resorts World Theater. The 94-year-old was spotted smiling from the sidelines as she watched her daughter perform.

Seated in a wheelchair and wrapped in a white blanket, Katherine appeared cheerful while cheering Janet on during the two-hour show. The concert featured 43 songs from Janet's catalog, including "Young Love," which she had not performed live in over a decade.

The reported appearance was notable because Katherine had rarely been seen in public in recent years. Before that, she had last been photographed in August 2023 while attending a performance by her grandson, Austin Brown.

Despite her limited public appearances, Katherine remains closely connected to the success of her family.

After one of the most devastating moments in the family's history, she would also take on an even more important role behind the scenes.

How Katherine Jackson Stepped in to Care for Michael Jackson's Children

After Michael died in 2009, Katherine took on the responsibility of helping raise his three children.

In an interview with NBC News, Katherine spoke about the deep loss she felt following her son's passing. "There's not a day go by that I don't think about my son," she said.

Katherine became a guardian figure for Michael's children — Prince, Paris, and Bigi — and worked to provide them with a more stable upbringing. She explained that she wanted them to live a calmer life than the one they experienced during their father's global fame.

"I never did like the fact that he put, um, scarfs or veils over their faces," Katherine said, referring to the coverings Michael once used to shield his children from public attention.

Instead, she believed security protection was enough while allowing the children to grow up more freely. At the same time, Katherine remained mindful of the special responsibility she carried in caring for the three grandchildren her son loved deeply.

"Out of all the people in Michael's life, I think Michael adored his children more than anything else. And they adored him," she told NBC News.

Katherine was reportedly born in Clayton, Alabama, on May 4, 1930, as Kattie B. Screws. In 1947, at 17, she met a professional boxer and aspiring musician, Joseph Jackson, and married him two years later.

The couple moved to Gary, Indiana. Together, Joseph and Katherine had ten children, nine of whom survived: Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Michael, Randy, and Janet. Marlon's twin, Brandon, died shortly after birth in 1957.

To support his large family, Joseph had to give up his dreams of musical stardom and become a crane operator. Later, Katherine took a part-time job at Sears to help make ends meet.

Then Joseph discovered his children had musical talent when he found them playing with his musical instruments. From then on, his main drive was to make them famous, to grasp the success that had eluded him. He succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.

As a two-year-old, Katherine contracted polio, which left her with a permanent limp. Little Katherine dreamed of becoming an actress and a country singer and was disappointed to discover that there were no black country singers.

Katherine's dreams of a happy marriage were also in vain. Joseph was unfaithful to her and had a decades-long affair and a child with another woman, Cheryle Terrell. Katherine filed for divorce twice — in 1973 and 1982 — but was talked into dropping the suits.

Despite his infidelities and harshness towards their children, she remained married to Joseph until he died in 2018. Katherine saw all her children achieve success and stood by her son Michael throughout his legal troubles.

Katherine Jackson Still Finds It Very Hard to Talk about Michael's Death

Then on June 25, 2009, Katherine suffered a cruel blow. Her son, Michael Jackson, the acclaimed King of Pop, passed away. She was so devastated by her loss that 12 years after Michael's passing, she was incapable of speaking about it.

Michael provided for his mother and three children in his will and left Katherine as the guardian of his children, Paris Jackson, Prince Michael "Bigi" Jackson II, and Prince Jackson. His father, Joseph, whom he accused of being abusive, was not mentioned, nor did he have access to the estate.

Years later, Joseph stated, "I never beat him [Michael] . I whipped him with a stick and a belt. I never beat him. You beat someone with a stick."

Katherine Jackson Now Leads a Quiet Life in a Small Town

Katherine raised her two oldest grandchildren by Michael, but admitted that she was too old to take on Bigi. The boy, also known as Blanket, was just seven years old when his father died.

When Bigi was 15, and Katherine was 87, she resigned as her guardian, leaving him in the care of his cousin, TJ Jackson.
