'That Sounds Nasty': 5 Actors With Unusual Hygiene Habits – One Hasn't Used Deodorant in 40 Years

From skipping daily showers to ditching deodorant altogether, these celebrities have spoken candidly about personal hygiene routines that have surprised fans and even some of their co-stars.
Behind the polished appearances seen at movie premieres, on award-show red carpets, and on magazine covers, several Hollywood stars have admitted they don't always follow conventional hygiene routines.

Some have openly defended their personal habits, while others have become the subject of stories from co-stars and crew members. Here are five actors whose candid comments — and, in some cases, long-standing rumors — sparked conversations about cleanliness.

Ashton Kutcher Doesn't Shower Every Day
Kutcher made headlines in 2021 after discussing his personal hygiene routine during an appearance on Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast.
The conversation began when Shepard argued that people don't necessarily need to wash their entire bodies with soap every day because doing so removes the skin's natural oils. Kutcher agreed, explaining that his own routine is fairly minimal.

"I wash my armpits and [expletive] daily and nothing else ever," he said. The actor added that after exercising, he usually splashes water on his face to remove sweat before relying on "a bar of Lever 2000 that just delivers every time. Nothing else."

However, years after those comments went viral, the "Two and a Half Men" star addressed the widespread assumption that he and his wife, Mila Kunis, rarely bathe.
In January 2026, while discussing his physical preparation for the FX body-horror thriller "The Beauty," the Hollywood star recalled how a brief podcast conversation snowballed into headlines.

"It was the craziest thing of all time," Kutcher said. "We made a comment at one point, and people were like, 'Does he stink? Does he smell?'" Gesturing to his co-stars Anthony Ramos and Jeremy Pope during the interview, he added:
"There was a comment on a podcast so long ago... and people are like, 'They don't shower.' I'm like, 'I shower. I go to the gym; I shower.'"

Mila Kunis Doesn't Bathe Her Children Every Day
During the same podcast appearance, Kunis revealed that her approach to bathing extended to her children as well. Recalling her early years, the actress explained, "I didn't have hot water growing up as a child, so I didn't shower much anyway."
She added that when she became a mother, daily baths were never part of the family's routine. "But when I had children, I also didn't wash them every day. Like, I wasn't the parent that bathed my newborns — ever," she said.

Her famous husband echoed that philosophy, saying, "Now, here's the thing: If you can see the dirt on them, clean them. Otherwise, there's no point."
The couple, who met while starring on "That '70s Show" before marrying in 2015, share two children — daughter Wyatt Isabelle and son Dimitri Portwood. The actress also disclosed details about her own hygiene routine, sharing:
"I don't wash my body with soap every day. But I wash pits and [expletive] and holes and soles."

Their comments quickly spread across social media, where many people expressed surprise at the couple's approach to hygiene. One person wrote, "Now, they look like dirts [sic] to me, can't change it back."
Another echoed the sentiment, commenting, "That sounds nasty." A third took aim at both actors, typing, "Both of them were made for each other. Perfect pair! Gross!!"

Matthew McConaughey Hasn't Used Deodorant in Decades
McConaughey has been open about avoiding deodorant for years. The Academy Award winner first discussed the topic in People's 2005 Sexiest Man Alive issue, revealing that he had not used deodorant in 20 years because he believed a man should smell like "a man."

Nearly two decades later, the topic resurfaced during Kate Hudson's July 2024 appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen." Asked whether she had once insisted McConaughey wear deodorant while filming "Fool's Gold," she said:
"No. He doesn't wear deodorant — and by the way, I don't either."

Although she denied asking him to change his routine, the actress did admit that she could smell her longtime co-star "from a mile [away]," explaining that the pair "got so close" while filming together.
Robert Pattinson Was Reportedly Known for Skipping Showers
Pattinson also became the subject of hygiene headlines early in his career. Around the time "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" was in production in 2009, reports emerged claiming the actor rarely showered while on set. According to an unnamed crew member who claimed to work closely with him:
"He stinks. I mean, it's awful. He never showers, and it drives people on the set crazy. He completely reeks."

Ben Affleck Was Reportedly Given Mints by a Co-Star
Not every celebrity hygiene story centers on showers or deodorant. In 2009, reports circulated claiming that Ben Affleck had struggled with persistent bad breath during earlier stages of his career.
According to those reports, his "Forces of Nature" co-star Sandra Bullock gave him a box of mints while they were filming the 1999 romantic comedy.

Whether discussing shower routines, deodorant, or other grooming habits, these accounts have remained among Hollywood's most talked-about hygiene stories.
While some actors have openly explained the reasoning behind their personal choices, others have found themselves at the center of reports and anecdotes that continue to resurface years later.
