The “Soul Food and the Wood” star, who’s incidentally an ambassador for the holiday of engagements, also released several other pics from their shoot on her Instagram. In the caption, she revealed some of the reasons why they got engaged.
“Because the greatest of these is love,” she captioned one. She wrote in a different post, "because we still believe in the power LOVE.”
More importantly, Melinda and her journalist fiance believe they said yes “because you don't marry someone you can live with. You marry someone you cannot live without.”
Both shared this message on their respective social media accounts. Since it was National Proposal Day, the pair also opted to include a series of pics celebrating Black Love called “3 Icons of Love.”
Malinda and Tariq channeled their favorite Black couples by recreating their famous moments. Two of them were President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama and Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz.
"We Said Yes! ...because you don't marry someone you can live with. You marry someone you cannot live without"
Since they weren’t just celebrating real-life couples, they likewise paid tribute to the fictional pair Billie Dee Williams and Diana Ross from the movie, “Mahogany.”
The pics were intended to be released in three consecutive days. Coinciding with the publication of their commemorative pics, Melinda released a statement formally announcing their engagement.
“We are engaged and we couldn’t be more happy about spending our lives together. To be honest from the moment we realized we were made for each other, we also recognized the impact we had on one another’s desire to be better individuals, and inspired the best in each other."
The actress added:
"That is where 'we said yes' came in. We said yes to encouraging each other to reach higher and deeper for greater.”
Once they tie the knot, it would become Melinda’s third marriage. She was previously married to DJ-D-Nice and “High School Musical” actor Mekhi Phifer.
With Mekhi, the actress has a son who went to prom in 2018. Mekhi shared photos of the then 17-year-old looking dapper in a black three-piece suit.
Meanwhile, for more of the engaged couple, people can also check out their new website called ThisisLeaving.com where they share their ideas about travel, food, arts and culture, and even fashion.
