Grandma Mary Duggar died of accidental drowning after slipping into her pool in Springdale, Arkansas on June 9. A rep for the Duggar family shared to Us about the 78-year-old’s medical history.

“Grandma Duggar has had two strokes over the last year and some other medical issues, and it’s our understanding that Grandma Duggar had slipped and fallen and passed by the time her daughter found her in the pool,” said the rep.

Also mentioned was the Duggar’s gratefulness toward the overwhelming support from their fans and followers who referred to their late grandma as “America’s grandma” -- a title the family didn’t give.

The announcement of the Duggar matriarch was posted on the family’s official website on Sunday afternoon, mentioning her 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren who survived her.

“She lived a tremendous life as a follower of Christ, a wife, a devoted mother, a loving mother-in-law, and a much-loved grandmother,” the statement read. “Proverbs 31:10-31 describes the virtuous woman; indeed, she personified these beautiful verses with her life. We deeply appreciate your prayers for our family and all who loved Mary during this time.”

Duggar’s grandchildren honored their late grandmother through posts on their respective Instagram accounts. Jana Duggar shared her last moments with her grandmother, just hours before the tragic accident happened.

Jana drove grandma Mary to church that morning, where she was able to praise her Savior. Hours later, she had gone to meet him. Jana’s post read:

“I’d say that’s probably how she would’ve chosen to finish out the day if she got to pick.”
