The Blast: BW Star Gloria Govan and Matt Barnes Reach Custody Agreement of Twins

A new court order granted warring ex-spouses, Matt Barnes and Gloria Govan joint custody of their twin sons. Barnes previously had full custody after an altercation with Govan that endangered their children.

Following an uphill battle over the custody of their twins, Gloria Govan and Matt Barnes will now be sharing it 50/50 according to the latest court ruling. The decision also details their schedules with their children and respective obligations concerning child support and education.

WHEN GOVAN LOST CUSTODY OF HER CHILDREN

It was only in November when Barnes scored a victory over Govan when he snagged full physical custody of their 10-year-old twin sons, Isaiah and Carter. It was a result of an altercation between them on Labor Day weekend. Barnes argued in court that Govan endangered their children’s lives in a fit of rage. She used her car to prevent Barnes from leaving with their children when she came to pick them up in school.

The court sided with Barnes who was given full custody of the boys and was granted a restraining order from Govan until May 2020. The “Basketball Wives” star was arrested following the incident but after criminal charges were dropped, she was asked to attend anger management and parenting classes.

Barnes and Govan began dating in 2006. In spite of alleged incidents of domestic violence that Barnes reportedly inflicted on Govan, they tied the knot in 2013. The marriage ended after two years.

A POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT FOR GOVAN

That must have worked out well for Govan who now regained 50 percent custody of their children. According to The Blast, she’ll be sharing physical custody of the boys who’ll be spending alternate weeks with each parent with fixed holiday schedules divided between Govan and Barnes.

Barnes’ restraining order against Govan still stands but the court clarified that exchanges between the parents concerning their children and during school events will not be a violation of this.

ON CHILD SUPPORT

With regard to child support, the former NBA player is expected to pay Govan $9,983 per month. This is a slight increase from the original $7,500 he was paying but a huge reduction from the $20,000 he was also previously paying. Barnes is likewise expected to settle Govan’s legal fees amounting to $15,000.

ON THE BOYS' EDUCATION

A plan for the boys’ education was also laid out. Currently enrolled in a private school, they’re expected to complete the current school year which Barnes is required to pay for. They’ll be moved to a public school the following school year and will remain there until the completion of middle school. For high school, they’ll be sent to Sierra Canyon High School at which time both Govan and Barnes will share tuition expenses.

ON BARNES' RESTRAINING ORDER AGAINST GOVAN

Barnes’ restraining order against Govan still stands but the court clarified that exchanges between the parents concerning their children and during school events will not be a violation of this. They were also prohibited from maligning one another in the presence of their children.

GOVAN'S RELATIONSHIP WITH ARNES' FORMER TEAMMATE

While still legally married to Barnes, Govan began dating Barnes’ former teammate, Derek Fisher in 2015. This drove a wedge between the friends who slammed each other for years through the press and social media. However, Barnes softened up upon learning of the two’s engagement in April 2018. He congratulated them both and assured their relationship was no longer an issue with him.

Meanwhile, Barnes welcomed his third son, AJ in December with his girlfriend, Anansa Sims. The pair reportedly met in college but only reconnected decades later. Sims is already a mother to three children from a previous marriage.

With the new court development regarding the custody of their children and their seemingly happy lives apart, here's hoping Barnes and Govan can finally move on in peace.
