‘CBS This Morning’ Host Gayle King Is the Proud Mother of Two Grown-Up Children
Gayle King, the TV personality and journalist best known for hosting “CBS This Morning,” has two grownup children who look just like their famous mother.
Apart from working in a very successful show, Gayle is one of Oprah Winfrey’s best friends. In a 2006 interview, Oprah praised her role as a mother, saying that she always put her children to bed even though she spent a lot of time working.
“Regardless of how you feel about the other as a spouse, you still have these children to raise together.”
Gayle King as a mother
According to Oprah, Gayle would say: “I want my face to be the first face my kids see when they wake up, and the last thing they see at night.”
For that reason, the “Color Purple” actress admitted to admiring “a lot of things” about Gayle and that thinking about the way she raised her children made her “weepy.”
Her relationship with William Bumpus Sr.
Gayle King was married to William G. Bumpus from 1982 to 1993. Although there might have been more than one reason for their split, Gayle has been open about one major factor of their relationship that led to the separation.
During an interview Gayle had with Vanity Fair’s Proust Questionnaire, she pointed out that she was not a fan of the woman she “caught naked with my now ex-husband on June 24, 1990, at 9:16 p.m., but I don’t remember the details.”
Co-parenting together
While the relationship between Gayle and William didn’t end well, they had two children together: daughter Kirby and son William Jr. Thankfully, the ex-couple managed to get along and raise their children without significant issues.
“Regardless of how you feel about the other as a spouse, you still have these children to raise together,” Gayle said during a SiriusXM radio interview with Will Smith in 2006.
Kirby is engaged!
Judging by Gayle’s Instagram account, her “favorite son” and “favorite daughter” grew up to be beautiful and wonderful human beings. Speaking of Kirby, 33, Gayle announced on February this year that she was officially engaged!
In the first image of the slideshow that the host uploaded to Instagram, she appeared wearing a red ensemble next to Kirby, who placed her hand in front of her chest and wore a pale blue coat and a scarf, and William Jr., who opted for a black jacket.
While William Jr.’s face showed excitement, Gayle and Kirby’s depicted surprise. The second pic portrayed Kirby clearly excited posing next to her fiancé Virgil Miller.
The next part of the slideshow was a short clip showing William Jr. and Gayle surprising Kirby at the restaurant where she and Virgil were eating. The fourth and fifth images showed the four of them sitting at the table and looking at Kirby’s ring carefully.
Celebrating William Jr.’s birthday
A few months later, Gayle uploaded another set of photos wishing her son a happy 32nd birthday and showing that they celebrated the milestone at Red Lobster, the place William Jr. has wanted to go since he was eight years old.
“Since he was 8 he has wanted to go to [Red Lobster] on this day so we do. (he LOVES the biscuits) tradition continues w/fav daughter & her FIANCÉ! & family friend swipe left for [Red Lobster] birthday song & will’s “embarrassed” face... we thought that was hilaaarious! happy birthday to WILL!!” Gayle wrote in the caption.
Kirby and William Jr.’s careers
Although both Kirby and William Jr. are as beautiful as their mother, they are quite different, especially when it comes to how private they like to keep their lives.
In William Jr.’s case, his Instagram profile is private, and he has preferred to live away from the spotlight.
So far, it is known that he graduated from Duke University in 2009 and that Oprah, his godmother, addressed the graduating class.
Kirby, on the other hand, is not as secretive as her younger brother. The 33-year-old woman graduated from Stanford in 2008 with a Bachelor's in Psychology and Human Biology, according to her LinkedIn page.
Apart from that, she got a Master of Public Health degree in Sociomedical Sciences at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in 2010.
In 2014, she worked at the White House as Associate Deputy Director for Policy for Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative. At the moment, she is one of the writers of My Fitness Pal, a lifestyle blog from Under Armour.
