When a couple falls in love and gets married, they hope their union is for life. That is, however, not always the case, something "A Piece Of The Action" actress Sheryl Lee Ralph knows only too well.

Before she met her prince charming, Frenchman Eric Maurice, "It's a Living," actress Sheryl Lee Ralph wore a string on her ring finger as a sign that she should pay attention to her own life.

The "Christmas Hotel" actress disclosed how it had dawned on her during her birthday party that she was the only person without a partner, as the rest of the attendees made merry in pairs.

However, luck was on her side, and soon after, Maurice replaced the string with a real ring, and the actress could not have been happier to find her Mr. Right.

They tied the knot in 1990, and for the years that followed, they had a beautiful marriage. Two years of marital bliss culminated in a son, Etienne Maurice. They welcomed a daughter, Ivy-Victoria Maurice, three years later.

Unfortunately, despite the seemingly happy union, the marriage fell apart in 2001. However, rumors about the split had begun circulating a year earlier, published by the National Enquirer.

The tabloid, which Ralph would later sue for libel, published the article with the headline "'Moesha' TV Mom Splits With Hubby." The lawsuit established that Ralph was indeed going through a divorce.

However, she'd wanted it done away from the limelight, something that the magazine made impossible after publishing the story. One of the many claims made by the tabloid was that Ralph was leaving her husband for a younger man.

While those remain allegations, the divorce did go through, and the years that would follow became an agonizing time for the actress. She recalled how wounded her children had been by the nasty divorce, saying:

"Your family is crushed, and then you have to deal with your kids. And I know your kids get hurt, unfortunate. I get to be able to see past it. I love my children."

The actress also disclosed that as the divorce became final, she became paralyzed with fear and self-doubt and sank into depression.

She shared that divorce was like peeling the skin off one's body. The pain was so deep that she understood how people often found themselves with addiction problems.

Ralph and Maurice appear to have reached a consensus regarding their children's upbringing despite the divorce being nothing but amicable. Their children seem to have maintained a close bond with their father, evident from posts on their Instagram pages.

In one of Ivy's posts, the 27-year-old digital creator paid tribute to her father, thanking him for setting the bar high for her future suitors by ensuring he bought her roses and chocolate and took her out for Valentine's Day every year.

Etienne, an actor and a director known for his work on "H.E.I.R." and "Hideous," also paid tribute to his dad on Father's Day with a cute throwback father-son photo, accompanied by the caption:

"Happy Fathers Day Pops! Blessed to have you in my life."
