Hollywood power couples are admired worldwide, and Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are one of them. They celebrated 22 years of marriage this weekend and are still going strong.
Douglas and Zeta-Jones share a birthday and each other's hearts. They often share their special occasions on Instagram. They have wished one another happy birthday on social media and shared their recent anniversary with the world.
To mark their anniversary, Douglas shared a collage of two photos showing Douglas and Zeta-Jones on their wedding day. He captioned the post saying "I love you so much," and mentioned it had been 22 years.
The day after the couple's anniversary, Zeta-Jones posted a photo of the couple kissing and said it had been 22 years and one day since the couple married. She also said she found joy in the fine details and loved her husband.
Douglas also shared a photo of him and his wife dressed in all white for her birthday on September 25. He wished her a happy birthday and said he loved her "always and forever." It was his birthday that day, too.
Talking about how their love story began, Douglas said he asked his publicist to organize for him to have a drink with Zeta-Jones. The publicist said he could make it happen, and the next night they had a drink at a bar.
While having a drink, Douglas realized that he was besotted with Zeta-Jones and wanted to make his feelings known. He said:
"I said to her after half an hour, 'You know, I'm gonna be the father of your children.'"
However, Zeta-Jones didn't seem interested and told him she had heard a lot about him and wanted to say "goodnight." However, he won her over when he sent her flowers as an apology. The couple fell in love, and Zeta-Jones once described Douglas as "the man of [her] dreams."
How Did Douglas and Zeta-Jones Save Their Marriage?
Like any couple, Zeta-Jones and Douglas went through their ups and downs. Yet they overcame their struggles and remained by one another's side. The couple separated in 2013 when Zeta-Jones was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Another factor that caused the couple to separate was that Douglas had lost his mother to cancer and saw his father's health deteriorating, too. It led to Douglas appreciating life more than before.
Talking about how they overcame the struggles they faced and what they did to become close again, Douglas said:
"It took work on both our parts. I don't think there's much chance of fixing a relationship if one of you is already out the door."
Douglas also said they were both wiser, which came with age and experience. The couple is now stronger than ever. They have been happily married for many years after their separation and gush about one another often.
Zeta-Jones and Douglas also share a blended family of three children. Douglas welcomed a son with his ex-wife. Zeta-Jones became a stepmother to Douglas' eldest son and then the mother of his next two sons.
How Did Douglas Save His Wife from "Vulnerable" Situations in Hollywood?
Zeta-Jones was asked about her feelings on the "Me Too" movement a few years ago and her experiences when she started her career. She mentioned that she was very young when she entered the industry.
However, she never felt "vulnerable" in Hollywood. She mentioned that when she was auditioning, she was never in a situation where she could have been taken advantage of, and soon after moving to Hollywood, she met her husband.
Zeta-Jones said that as a young actress, everyone knew she was married to Michael Douglas, and she believes that helped keep her out of situations in which she could have been vulnerable to sexual harassment.
Talking about how she felt being with Douglas as a young actress at a time when women were being taken advantage of, she said:
"I don't know whether it was beneficial, but perhaps it meant I wasn't in environments where I would have been vulnerable otherwise."
The couple met in France and married two years later in a ceremony held in New York City before welcoming their children. The couple has warned their children about the difficult situations they might encounter if they entered the entertainment industry.
