Bonnie Raitt Chose Not to Have Children

Raitt seems like someone who would take parenting seriously because of her admiration for kids, as seen in her reaction when a 5-year-old boy went past her table during a lunch meeting with a New York Times journalist. However, the legendary singer admitted that being a mother is not simple. She pointed out:

''Having children is an incredible commitment. That's why I chose not to. I feel that my job is to mother the causes that I'm involved in."

Instead of having biological children, Raitt viewed the charity organizations she worked with as her kids. She said that that's where she puts all her focus and energy and feels dejected when she cannot help some of those organizations. Therefore leaving those charities to become a parent felt like abandonment.

Moreover, if the welfare organizations were her children, then Raitt understandably had a lot on her plate. During the 1998 conversation with the New Your Times, she said she had several organizations she worked with, ranging from air and water pollution activists to guitar classes for young women and everything in between.

Raitt is not known for being involved in too many relationships, choosing to prioritize her career. In fact, she has only been married for eight years in her entire life. Raitt married actor Michael O'Keefe on April 24, 1991. Their marriage lasted about eight years before the couple went their separate ways in 1999.
