Shelly Loraine Kearns developed an endearing bond with her daughter, Christina Aguilera, which the "Candyman" singer has unapologetically shared with the world over the years. Most recently, Christina expressed her admiration for her mother in a September 2022 chat with People Chica.

She described Shelly as a "very loving woman" who sacrificed extensively and fought to protect her and her younger sister, Rachel. For Christina, Shelly had a strength about her that she grew to respect deeply.

Christina also told People Chica how her mother exposed her to various cultures, languages, and music through travel. It was through this exposure that Shelly instilled in Christina a passion for learning and the fierce courage to face her fears.

Shelly Helped Her Daughter Realize Her Dreams

In June 2016, Christina penned a heartwarming message about Shelly in a since-deleted Instagram post, alongside a throwback photo of herself and her mother. As the "Genie in a Bottle" songstress expressed her gratitude for Shelly, she wrote:

"Mom, thank you for driving me to my singing jobs when I was 7 and helping me realize my dreams. When women support each other, we accomplish amazing things."

Shelly ensured that her daughter had her chance in show business, and with that support, Christina landed one of her earliest jobs as a cast member in "The New Mickey Mouse Club," alongside fellow pop stars Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.

Shelly Managed to Get Out of an Abusive Marriage

Shelly was married to former United States Army soldier Fausto Xavier Aguilera, with whom she welcomed Christina and Rachel. Her former husband was physically and emotionally abusive, something Christina remembered witnessing as a child:

"I watched my mom have to be submissive, watch her Ps and Qs or she's gonna get beat up."

Thankfully, when Christina was six, Shelly ended her marriage with Fausto. She sought a new life with her kids and moved to Rochester, Pittsburgh, where she found a new love. She married a paramedic, James Kearns, with whom she welcomed a son, Michael.

With such a tumultuous childhood in her early years, Christina vowed never to allow a man to put her in a vulnerable position, whether emotionally or financially. As a mother to Shelly's grandkids, Summer Rain Butler and Max, she prioritized providing her children with a safe and loving environment.

Shelly Was There for Her Daughter When She Got Her Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In November 2010, when her daughter received the 2,432nd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Shelly knelt by her side as she unveiled the milestone. Shelly's youngest, Michael, was also present at the prestigious event, holding his sister's hand as she accepted the honor.

And while Shelly has supported all of Christina's positive achievements, the mom of three also gave Christina the strength to deal with her lows, including the backlash she once received for her sexually explicit song "Dirrty."

The track garnered mixed reviews, as Christina noted it was a "very interesting" and "controversial" time for her. For Shelly's daughter, "Dirrty" was meant to empower women to take control of their sexuality. However, as she explained, women are often viewed as inadequate when it comes to fulfilling "sexual fantasies."

And yet, when they choose to be overtly sexual, they're shamed. Despite that controversy, Christina's career still skyrocketed and continued to thrive. In November last year, she accepted the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album award at the 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards.
