Who Is Hiam Abbass, and What Is Her Ethnicity?

Coming into the world on the last day of November in 1960, in Nazareth, Israel, Abbass is of Palestinian origin. Born into a Muslim Arab family, she grew up in the Arab-Muslim-dominated Israeli village of Deir Hanna in the North of the country. She began her career at the Palestinian National Theater or El-Hakawati, which had just been established in Jerusalem's American Colony. Although the company went on tours to Europe, their existence back home was complicated, with Israeli authorities not wholly agreeing with the happenings at the theater.

When she moved to Europe, Abbass remained in touch with her roots. Most of her work revolves around Arab cinema. She has portrayed different nationalities on-screen, including Tunisians, Syrians, and Algerians. She has appeared in several acclaimed movies, including the Academy Award-nominated drama "Paradise Now."
