If Jeremy Pope has a partner, they were not on the actor's arm at the 2023 Met Gala, but he did not attend fashion's biggest night alone.

The "Ain't Too Proud" star wore a spectacular faux fur cape at the Met Gala on Monday, May 1, 2023. The late designer, Karl Lagerfeld's likeness, was displayed on the extended train, in tune with the theme, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty."

It is customary for fashion designers to invite a celebrity as their date to the event. Donatella Versace was proud to have Anne Hathaway by her side, and Usher accompanied an up-and-comer, Bianca Saunders.

He discussed his early struggle with reconciling the different sides of himself.

Paris Hilton made her debut at the gala on the arm of Marc Jacobs. Pope had the pleasure of walking up the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Balmain's Olivier Rousteing.

Jeremy Pope Was Attracted to Both Men and Women

A year before the COVID-19 pandemic caused the shutdown of Broadway for months on end, Pope made the most out of being cast as the lead in "Choir Boy" for the 2019 season. He was later nominated for a Tony Award for the part.

The actor originated the character of Pharus Jonathan for its first run six years before reprising the role on Broadway. "Pharus has healed a lot of us," he said of the homosexual teenager who finds himself in a hypermasculine setting when he wins a spot at a prep school.

"I think as I'm dissecting why it felt harder or more of a freefall last time versus this time, it's because growing up black — it's hard, and it's not really accepted of us to be emotional in that way, to express our emotions," he told EW in 2019. "You don't want to be no punk."

"Pharus has helped me grow as an individual," he says, and explains how portraying the character on stage helped him "dissect the community" and express a part of himself.

Pope opened up to Janet Mock, his director on "Hollywood," when she interviewed the actor for their magazine in 2020. He discussed his early struggle with reconciling the different sides of himself:

"Freshman or sophomore year of high school, I was dealing with my sexuality and what that looked like. I hadn't really explored with other guys, but I had been with girls, and I remember that it was more like, I think, I like both. What happens if you like both? What does that even mean?"

Growing up in the church greatly impacted how he developed his performance skills and shook his childhood shyness when getting his first choir solo at around 11. Unfortunately, his religious background made it harder for the young man to understand his sexuality.

The actor "wasn't ready to identify with the label of gay or bisexual" during his early years of high school because of the way his church framed homosexuality as a choice. After moving to New York, the "Pose" actor "started to identify" with who he was.

On his 30th birthday last year, Pope shared a photo of himself as a child taking a treat from a plastic bowl. The star thanked his followers for all their love.

He wrote that he had promised himself "to honor the inner child" for as long as possible. "Forever finding the fun, a belly laugh, & a good plate," he expanded.
