On June 28, 2023, Chrissy Teigen opened up about her journey to motherhood alongside her beloved husband, John Legend. The model took to Instagram to post a lengthy message detailing how she had always wanted four children, even when she was a little girl.

Teigen wrote about her childhood, recalling how she would strut around with two stuffed glow worms and two cabbage patch dolls in her arms, taking the four toys in her charge everywhere she went. Teigen also remembered how her mother always opened Pound Puppy boxes to ensure she got her daughter the one with four pups.

Teigen also spoke about losing her son, Jack, while she was pregnant with him, saying the experience scared her and the rest of her family tremendously. After losing Jack, she was afraid to try conceiving again, so Teigen and Legend agreed that they would opt for surrogacy instead to save them both the heartbreak.

A year after Jack's death, Legend and Teigen decided to honor their lost baby with a special installation in the middle of their Beverly Hills home.

With their search for the perfect surrogates well on the way, Teigen decided she wanted to try carrying a baby of her own one last time. She had already seen how bad it could be, but she didn't want to spend the rest of her life wondering whether she could have had another baby herself.

They restarted IVF treatments, which gave the couple their first two children. As fate would have it, Legend and Teigen met the perfect surrogate around the same time, a woman named Alexandra. With the new surrogate working out wonderfully, Teigen also fell pregnant, and soon, the family had two more little ones cooing away in their cribs.

How Teigen and Legend Lost Their Son

In 2020, Teigen and Legend faced one of the most challenging things they've ever had to deal with. At the time, Teigen was pregnant with the couple's third child, and they were looking forward to meeting the baby boy. Their hopes were completely dashed.

Teigen likened it to her memory of talking to her granddad's ashes when she was a little girl.

Sadly, the boy, whom Teigen and Legend had started referring to as Jack, didn't survive. Days later, Teigen shared a post on Instagram to mark the loss of her baby boy, writing about the experience and sharing photos of her and Legend grieving in the hospital.

The distraught mother shared black-and-white images of her sitting on the hospital bed after losing her baby and a few more of her and Legend taking a moment to be together after the tragic event. Teigen wrote, "We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we've never felt before."

The model expressed her regret that she couldn't bring Jack home to the loving family waiting for him but stated that she and her husband would always keep the little boy in their hearts. Teigen also spoke about the two children they successfully brought into the world, saying she is hugely grateful for them.

Teigen also addressed her fans and followers, thanking everyone for their heartfelt messages and well wishes. The model wrote that both she and her husband were immensely grateful for the support from the community surrounding them and took all the messages to heart. And soon, they made another loving tribute to their lost son.

A year after Jack's death, Legend and Teigen honored their lost baby with a special installation in the middle of their Beverly Hills home. While Teigen promoted her cookbook, Legend grabbed the phone, showing off their home. He stopped by a large tree they had placed in their house in honor of Jack, which they called the "tree of life."

The tree looked tremendous as its branches stretched out in the middle of the home. The couple had opened a small hole in the middle of the floor where the tree was planted. Surrounding the hole was a large bronze ring etched with pictures of birds, flowers, and other flora.

Teigen commented that they chose to bury Jack's ashes in the ground they planted the tree in so their little boy could always be with them. She also noted that in Thai culture, it is essential to remember those who have passed away and keep them alive by allowing them to persist in memory.

Teigen also said that by having the tree, she hopes to give her two oldest children a chance to have good memories of their older brother, even though they never had the opportunity to meet him in person. Teigen likened it to her memory of talking to her granddad's ashes when she was a little girl.

After explaining the significance of the tree, Legend showed off the rest of their $17.5 million mansion, panning the camera to the dining area so fans could see the magnificent chandelier shaped like a growing vine. The couple has shown their house on more than one occasion, sharing the views from the beautiful open-plan property.

The family reportedly did several renovations on the house, and they own a few more properties scattered throughout Beverly Hills, New York, and West Hollywood. In 2021, the family moved into the new Beverly Hills home where they are currently living — the house with Jack's tree — to facilitate their growing family.
