Sally Hawkins is a decorated actress, renowned for her prowess onscreen. However, the TV star is painfully shy, admittedly socially awkward, and consciously avoids public appearances or speaking about her personal life.

Before joining the film and TV industry in the late 1990s, Sally Hawkins had grown accustomed to performing on stage. The English-born star graduated from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1998 and had starred in several stage productions.

Once she began appearing onscreen, it didn't take long for her to gain recognition. Her first movie role was in 2002's "All or Nothing," a touching story about a couple's love beginning to fizzle and re-igniting in the wake of a tragedy faced by their community.

It is among the many romances Hawkins has portrayed onscreen, but little can be said about her love life off-screen. The actress has taken care to guard her privacy, but more than that, she dreads public appearances, and her colleagues have affectionately attested.

Hawkins has not been romantically linked to anyone throughout her career. She also hasn't married, and when questions about her personal life arise, she describes it as "incredibly dull." The 47-year-old said she never goes out and is always "flabbergasted" when people recognize her.

Though her love life remains a mystery, she has shared that she has Lupus, an autoimmune disease. Hawkins also has a sibling named Finbar Hawkins, but little is known about him beyond his name.

Sally Hawkins Rarely Appears for Interviews or on the Red Carpet

In a rare instance where Hawkins agreed to be interviewed, a few of her former colleagues gave insight into her "allergy to publicity." Guillermo del Toro was among them and those who held her in high esteem. "She's one of the people I most revere in the world," the director said.

Del Toro worked with Hawkins in 2017's "The Shape of Water," co-starring Octavia Spencer and Michael Shannon. He invites her for dinner whenever he is in London, but the actress rarely accepts.

"She's very private, and she's very shy socially. I respect that. But perhaps she avoids it because she thinks I'll spend the entire time telling her she's a genius, which I would," Del Toro shared.

James Corden (Julia Carey's husband), a close friend of Hawkins, echoed this sentiment regarding her reluctance to do interviews or walk the red carpet. "Sally is a reluctant star in the truest sense. I think it comes from her thinking, 'What have I got to say?'" the actor enlightened.

Sally Hawkins Doesn't Like Being Seen and Enjoys Her Solitude

Hawkins believes two of her advantages to being stealthy are her petite frame, which she hides in oversized coats, and her voluminous hair, which she uses to shield her face. If she is recognized, however, she said her interactions with fans are often lovely.

"At least people don't throw things or shout at me," she remarked. It's part of why she detests attending public events. Hawkins often marvels at how people like Cate Blanchett (a former co-star) get through them and still "appear sane." She feels more comfortable when she spends time alone, indulging in pottery.
