Rufus Wainwright's Husband: The Singer Raises a Daughter with His Longtime Spouse Jörn Weisbrodt

Rufus Wainwright and his husband, Jörn Weisbrodt, have celebrated over a decade of marriage following their star-studded ceremony in New York. The singer later welcomed a child with Leonard Cohen's daughter and revealed they have a progressive way of raising their kid.

Rufus Wainwright is a gay singer and songwriter who found love with his husband, Jörn Weisbrodt, after setting the record straight about his sexuality. However, the musician revealed that he wasn't always open to the idea of same-sex marriage.

After experiencing a parental instinct, Rufus Wainwright announced that he had welcomed a daughter with Lorca Cohen. However, the singer revealed that Leonardo Cohen's daughter is their child's mother in every sense, with Jörn Weisbrodt serving as the deputy dad.

After coming out as gay when he was a teenager, Wainwright became a legendary homosexual artist who received praise from musicians such as Elton John and John Mayer. But, it wasn't always smooth sailing, as the "Heading for Home" singer said:

"If I had been somewhat more strategic and less honest and gone with an asexual or bisexual persona, I think I would have been given a lot more opportunity and attention."

However, the singer had no regrets, as he became a beacon of hope among his "loyal" fans who appreciated his honesty. Aside from his fear of contracting AIDS, a deadly threat to the LGBTQ community back then, Wainwright further joked that he could have never been in the closet as he was a terrible liar.

In August 2012, after many years by each other's side, Wainwright and Weisbrodt, the artistic director for Toronto's arts and entertainment Luminato Festival and producer, said, " I do" on a beach in New York.

The grooms wore custom Viktor & Rolf Monsieur suits on their special day, and their dear friend and fellow artist Justin Vivian Bond officiated the ceremony. Guests included Alan Cumming, Julianne Moore, and Carrie Fisher.

However, eight years after marriage, Wainwright revealed that he had not always been open to the idea of getting married. "I was very set in my ways in terms of, you know, the old-school homosexual habits [...]," he said. Fortunately, the singer had a change of heart.

Following the news of their newborn, Wainwright revealed that Cohen is not their surrogate but the mother of their daughter, and Weisbrodt is the deputy dad.

Since becoming husband and husband, Weisbrodt has been a regular on his husband's page. In November 2022, Wainwright documented his and Weisbrodt's hike up Runyon Canyo with their pets in Los Angeles. He wished his followers a Merry Christmas with a picture of the happy couple in December.

In January 2023, Wainwright turned to Instagram to celebrate his husband's 50th birthday and shared a snap of Weisbrodt embracing the scenic views of the outdoors and shared, "[...] Today, January 26th 2023, my incredible husband turns half a century [...]."

Wainwright posted a photo dump of the couple loving on each other in honor of Valentine's Day this year, and a few days ago, Weisbrodt took over his husband's Instagram to celebrate Wainwright's birthday and sweetly revealed:

"[...] We have travelled into every corner of this earth, have experienced incredible highs and some lows, and every day I wake up, I am know will be a good day because you are in my life. You are an incredible husband, father, artist, human being (sic)."

A year before announcing the birth of his daughter, Wainwright remembered a conversation he had with Lorca Cohen and her famous father, where she expressed her amazement at watching a baby become a person.

After recalling Cohen's father's response that it was "the only amazing thing there is." Wainwright revealed, "It's clearly not a necessity for everyone, but I feel, you know, I shouldn't deny myself all that ­amazement…"

The singer and his husband later announced the arrival of their bundle of joy with Cohen, Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen. Following the news of their newborn, Wainwright revealed that Cohen is not their surrogate but the mother of their daughter, and Weisbrodt is the deputy dad.

Despite his fame, Wainwright's daughter has rarely appeared in public. In February 2022, the singer celebrated his daughter's birthday without revealing her face and shared a snap of her cuddling their dog on a "lazy summer morning" in August 2022. He shared more glimpses of the twelve-year-old in a photo dump documenting their family vacation to the Grand Canyon.
