Brandi Carlile has cemented her name in the expansive genre of country music, achieving remarkable success; however, she comes from humble beginnings and isn't shy about it. The singer grew up in rural Seattle, where the term country became a state of mind and being to her.

She grew accustomed to watching her neighbors raise chickens, go fishing, and drive around in pickup, all she still enjoys doing. She was raised by a country-loving mother, Teresa Carlile, alongside two younger siblings.

Teresa grew up comfortably in a household with two other sisters. Her daughter described her as a "charming and mischievous" woman who could "read a room like no one else" and as having both infectious enthusiasm and gloominess.

Brandi recalled being as young as eight when country music began "creeping in," listening to Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, and Tammy Wynette. Her mother nurtured her growing love for the genre, as she, too, was a country singer.

Teresa would invite young Brandi onstage, and they would perform duets together. She would take her daughter to "Northwest Grand Ol' Opry" karaoke nights, where a live band played. "I remember going to see my mom and thinking she was famous," Brandi recalled.

On one of those nights, a young girl sang the Dolly Parton song "Coat of Many Colors," giving Brandi the courage to do the same the following week. She has been in love with performing ever since.

Brandi Carlile's Parents Married in Their 20s

Brandi spoke about her parents in her 2021 memoir "Broken Horses." They met at a hotel, where her mother was a hostess, and her father served as a breakfast prep cook. They began a romantic relationship, and when her mother became pregnant with her, they married.

When they tied the knot, Teresa and her former husband were 20 and 21, respectively. By then, her family had temporarily relocated to Colorado, and she moved in with the Carlile family. Shortly after Brandi was born, the family of three sought a new home, but they moved around frequently.

Though it's unclear when, nor is the reason known, Brandi's parents divorced when she was young. By then, Teresa, who also appeared in Brandi's 2021 documentary, had given birth to two more children, Brandi's brother, Jay Carlile, and her sister, Tiffany Carlile.

A Family Member Ended the Life of Brandi Carlile's Father

Brandi's father grew up "dirt poor" and was one of six siblings raised by a single mother. He died when Brandi was 12 after being fatally shot by her uncle. Brandi recalled the incident and everything that transpired before and after it occurred in a heartwrenching Facebook post.

She revealed her father was romantically involved with a woman who happened to be her uncle's wife and had begun neglecting his relationship with Brandi. The openly gay singer, a mom of two, was hurt and angry with her father's actions in his last days, but she learned to forgive him.
