Rodney Keith Jones Had a Rough Life – Story of Leslie Jones' Brother

Rodney Keith Jones was Leslie Jones' younger brother, and the siblings had a loving but complicated relationship. When he was young, Rodney Keith Jones got mixed up with the wrong crowd, affecting his relationship with his sister.

In February 2015, comedian Leslie Jones posted a series of throwback photos on X (formerly Twitter). They were of a happy little boy, either posing to be pictured or hanging out in his home. The first picture showed him wearing jeans, a red long-sleeved button-up, with a wool pullover.

The youngster stood next to a bunch of records and record players with large headphones planted at his ears. In the second, he dressed similarly and smiled expectantly, posing with his hands crossed on a thick plank.

And in the third, the boy appeared to laugh, excited by something off-camera. His name was Rodney Keith Jones, and he was Leslie's little brother. Six years had passed since he died when the actress shared this post. She missed him, as she captioned it:

A Little about Rodney Keith Jones' Early Life

Rodney was born in 1970 to Sundra Diane and Willie Jones Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee. His family moved to South Los Angeles in the 1980s, and his father was an army veteran. Still, the Jones patriarch had landed a job at Stevie Wonder's radio station in the Californian city.

His mother tried to keep him and Leslie in line, as she took the siblings to church regularly and did "everything she could to hold the family together." Rodney grew popular in their new home, and his friendship circle widened; however, Leslie implied his new mates were questionable individuals.

Rodney Keith Jones' Choices Caused a Rift between Him and His Sister

In her new 2023 memoir, Leslie wrote that she and Rodney loved each other, but their dynamic was that of cordial roommates rather than close siblings after they moved to Los Angeles. The comedian added that "things really changed" when her brother was caught stealing.

Rodney had purloined video games from a discount retail store called Zodys. The police were involved, but their mother took care of the matter. Rodney was 12 then, and he begged his mother not to tell his dad, but she insisted she couldn't lie to her husband.

Although he wasn't punished, Rodney felt incredibly guilty. He went to his father and apologized, and all Willie Jr. had to say was, "I'm just really disappointed in you, son." Leslie said this broke her brother.

Her brother spiraled under peer pressure, giving into gang violence and drug distribution. Still, Leslie was protective of Rodney. She remembered how close and how much of a handful they were when they were young. But as typical the brother and sister, they also fought quite often.

Rodney Keith Jones Had a Daughter When He Died

Rodney was found unconscious in a Santa Barbara park. The person who found him called Leslie to inform her what had happened and told her Rodney was getting treatment at a hospital. Leslie told herself she'd deal with the situation once she got home.

Two days later, she received another call informing her that Rodney had died. "I laid on the floor for two days," Leslie recalled. But she pulled herself together and planned his funeral. Rodney was 38 when he passed. His death inspired his sister to remain true to herself.

Leslie revealed Rodney had a daughter who had gone to see him when he was in the hospital. Although his sister is known to be currently single, the TV star was once linked to Kate McKinnon and Kyle Mooney and assumed to be gay.
