The retired Hollywood lighting director is embracing a fresh chapter after overcoming serious health challenges and finding love again.

A Late-Life Love He Never Saw Coming
In an exclusive interview with The Daily Mail, Thomas admitted he never imagined he would rediscover happiness at this stage in his life.
"I felt neglected and sad for so many years, but now I am enjoying life again. After so many tough times, I feel truly blessed to have found someone very special who takes such good care of me," he gushed.

The 81-year-old met his partner, Rio Canedo, 46, while recovering from a life-altering surgery in December that resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee.
Rio, who has two grown children, reportedly did not recognize Thomas when they first met at a rehabilitation hospital in Cebu. The encounter came shortly after Thomas relocated there in January 2025 with his son, Thomas Markle Jr.
Their relationship marks a new beginning following Thomas' long-ago split from Doria Ragland when Meghan was only two years old.
In the years since, Thomas has spoken about the emotional toll of his strained relationship with his daughter, particularly after her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. He has yet to meet his son-in-law or his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.

A Devastating Health Battle That Changed Everything
Thomas' recent health scare was severe. A major blood clot cut off circulation to his foot, leading to the amputation. He spent several days in intensive care, followed by weeks in the hospital before being transferred to a specialized rehabilitation facility.
He previously endured a serious stroke in 2022 that left him unable to speak for weeks, marking one of the lowest points in his life. In the aftermath, Thomas chose to relocate to the Philippines last year, hoping to distance himself from painful reminders of his estranged relationship with his daughter and the grandchildren he has yet to meet.
Thomas also indicated that life felt especially difficult after the stroke, which influenced his decision to move far from home in search of a calmer environment. He was drawn to the Philippines for its slower pace and welcoming people, and did not expect that the move would lead to meeting Rio and transforming his life in such a meaningful way.
Since then, his condition has significantly improved, with his ability to speak returning over time — something he credits in large part to constant conversation with Rio.
Rio has also taken an active role in improving Thomas' health, placing him on a strict no-sugar diet that has contributed to noticeable weight loss. She encourages him to stay hydrated and even limits his treats, setting aside chocolate gifts to be enjoyed in small portions.
Finding Peace Far from Royal Drama
Now recovering while battling pneumonia, Thomas shared that he feels secure and well looked after under Rio's care. Despite his illness, he is not dwelling on it, focusing instead on the support he receives from her.

He also described his current lifestyle as peaceful, noting that he rarely follows the news and instead surrounds himself with a more positive environment.
According to him, the culture in the Philippines emphasizes kindness and respect, particularly toward older people, something he has come to deeply appreciate. He highlighted the warmth of the medical staff caring for him, as well as the lively atmosphere created by young trainee nurses whose laughter fills the facility.

After years of carrying emotional pain tied to his strained relationship with Meghan, he indicated that he has finally found peace and joy again, embracing a more hopeful outlook on life.
Meeting Rio has been a bright spot in an otherwise difficult period. "I know some people will say hurtful things, but I don't care. I want to talk about this because I never thought I would ever be happy again," he said.
Why He No Longer Cares What Critics Say
Thomas is aware that his relationship may draw criticism or even ridicule, but he has made it clear that public opinion no longer holds much weight for him.
"I've been through tough times, which makes me appreciate the good times. I am finally at peace. I was in pain for so many years about what happened with my youngest daughter, Meghan. I could never escape the stories online and in magazines and newspapers. I was constantly hounded by paparazzi," he noted.

In contrast, his life in the Philippines has brought a sense of calm and distance from that scrutiny. He described his current routine as quiet and fulfilling, grounded in gratitude for his improving health, his relationship with Rio, and the care he continues to receive.
At this stage in his life, he is focused less on outside opinions and more on embracing the time he has. "I'm an old man and never thought I would be alive at nearly 82," he said.

Thomas also reflected on the broader meaning of his story, hoping it might offer encouragement to others. "The haters will hate, but to be honest, I don't give a damn. Life is for living. There's nothing more important in life than love," he declared.
Fans Rally Behind His Second Chance
Online, reactions have largely leaned supportive, with many sharing their thoughts in their own words. One person noted, "Bless this man. Raised an ungrateful grifter. He finally found peace."

Another fan chimed in, "Thomas Markle looks happier and healthier than ever with Rio❤️. Everybody deserves their happy ever after. Thomas deserves a little happiness ❤️." Positive comments were shared, with one reading, "Good for him, I hope he's happy and doing well."
Inside Their Tender Life Together
Today, Thomas and Rio share a comfortable, hotel-style room on the 12th floor of the rehabilitation center in Cebu. Their connection is evident in the way they interact — easy, affectionate, and full of warmth.
Rio is attentive to his needs, often caring for him with quiet dedication, while their shared moments are filled with laughter and light teasing. When she reaches for his hand, something she does often, Thomas responds with visible joy, clearly grateful for the companionship and sense of peace he has found.
Rio affectionately calls Thomas "Sir Tom" and said she was unaware of his royal connections when they first met. She recalled their initial encounter in mid-December, when he arrived at the facility by ambulance and greeted her with a wave.

At the time, she had been told he could be difficult, but her experience proved otherwise, as she came to see him as kind, humorous, and respectful. She also noted that in the Philippines, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are not widely followed, which contributed to her not recognizing him.
Though shy when discussing their relationship, Rio has shared that she cares deeply for him. A divorcee, she is also focused on her 16-year-old son, who is preparing to graduate high school with aspirations of becoming a teacher. Meanwhile, her 22-year-old daughter is currently studying pharmacy in college.

Looking Ahead After Years of Heartache
For Thomas Markle, the relationship developed naturally over time, with the two growing close before eventually living together. He has described it as something he deeply values, crediting Rio with bringing happiness and attentive care into his life, while also hoping he brings her the same sense of joy.
Looking ahead, he hopes to travel with her to the United States once his health allows. His recovery remains ongoing, with regular physiotherapy sessions, plans to begin aqua therapy, and the expectation of being fitted with a prosthetic limb later in the year.
As for the possibility of marriage, he has suggested it is something he would consider if it benefited Rio, though it is not currently a focus. For now, he is content with the life they are building together, expressing gratitude for the sense of safety, care, and happiness he now experiences.
