Thomas Markle reveals he heard about Meghan's pregnancy on the radio

Thomas Markle opens up about learning of his daughter Meghan Markle's pregnancy from the radio. The proud father reveals the news was "overwhelming and joyful" while sharing his initial thoughts on Meghan becoming a mother.

Thomas Markle was driving towards the US-Mexico border at one am when he heard joyful news on the radio. His daughter, Meghan Markle is pregnant.

HIS FIRST THOUGHT

Overcome with emotion, Thomas’ first thought was a flashback of the day Meghan was born on August 4, 1981. It was the middle of the night and Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland was still asleep from anesthesia. Thomas recalled holding his daughter in his arms. He was the first person to do so. “It was love at first sight,” he says.

LEARNING THE NEWS

Days after news of Meghan’s pregnancy hit headlines, Thomas spoke to the Daily Mail about finding out about his daughter’s pregnancy. Like everyone else, Meghan’s estranged father learned the news through the media. He was listening to his favorite radio program on KABC when a newsflash announced,

“Congratulations are in order for America’s favorite Royals. Kensighton Palace confirmed that Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry are expecting their first child in the spring.”

“My baby is having a baby,” Thomas proudly said of the news.

“I was filled with love, joy and happiness for both my beautiful daughter and my son-in-law. A new baby is a blessing and I look forward to seeing a little Meghan or a little Harry.”

Thomas was immediately reminded of Meghan’s birth and how he thought she was beautiful. He said she winked at him while he was holding her.

“I fell in love and have never stopped loving her from that day forward.”

STRAINED RELATIONSHIP

Sadly, in recent months, Thomas’ relationship with his daughter had been strained. A series of press interviews he gave leading to Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry drove them apart. Things turned for the worse when he staged paparazzi photos of him fitting a suit for the wedding. He hung up on Prince Harry during a phone conversation where the royal scolded him for colluding with the press.

Thomas later suffered a heart attack which denied him the opportunity to attend Meghan’s wedding and walk her down the aisle. He also apologized for his lack of judgment in using the press for his financial gain.

But the harm had been done. Communication ties between him and the royal couple had been cut. Any message he had, he coursed through the media. Much like his current thoughts on his daughter’s pregnancy.

ON MEGHAN BECOMING A MOTHER

Thomas said he wasn’t surprised by the baby news knowing his daughter loved children.

“She and Harry have been talking about wanting a family from the start. I’m delighted for them both.”

The proud father believes Meghan “will make a fantastic mother." He says she’s “wonderful with children” and she’s used to having kids around.

ON BEING A FATHER TO MEGHAN

Thomas also reminisced about being a father to Meghan when she was growing up. Though he left her mother when she was only three years old, he helped raise his “Meggie” or “Bean” who stayed with him on weekends. Between the ages of 12 and 18, she even lived full time with Thomas, an accomplished Hollywood lighting director then.

“I would take her to school every morning because it was on my way to work at the studio. If I could, I would pick her up in the afternoon or I’d send a limo or one of the crew to pick her up and bring her to the set.”

Thomas’ favorite moments with his daughter were their quiet moments he said. He also revealed his greatest joy was “coming home from work, picking her up and just walking back and forth with her in the kitchen.”

“Holding her in my arms. She would listen to the hum of the refrigerator and it would lull her to sleep.”

He also cherished the time they spent in the garden looking up at the moon he told her was “Meggie’s moon.”

“I did that for so long that eventually she was able to look up, point and say, ‘Meggie’s moon.’”

MEGHAN'S THOUGHTS ONE FATHER'S DAY

It would seem Meghan reciprocated his father’s love when she once wrote him a touching Instagram message on Father’s Day. She credited him for her work ethic, for her love of Busby Berkeley films and club sandwiches, and even teaching her the importance of writing thank you notes. She also thanked him for her “signature Markle nose.” Meghan signed it “I love you xo – Bean.”

MEGHAN'S THOUGHTS TODAY

While Meghan’s father’s thoughts are on her, it’s more likely her thoughts are on her busy schedule in Australia. She’s currently touring with Harry Down Under and will be heading to Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand after. The royal pair kicked off their 16-day tour with their baby news and has since been delighting Australians with their presence.

Though Meghan committed to being present in all 76 engagements, she already skipped an engagement to prioritize her health and her baby’s. She was photographed tenderly holding on to her bump on several occasions, a sign that she’s thinking of her unborn child and making sure he/she is fine.
