Erykah Badu's Daughter Belts out 'Dreamgirls' Hit 'One Night Only' (Video)
Talent runs in the family, and Erykah Badu just proved that by sharing a video of her teen daughter singing her heart out at a high school act. Puma, whom Badu shares with rapper The D.O.C, has been gaining the admiration from her mom’s fans for years thanks to her amazing vocals.
Puma Sabti Curry might be just 14-years old, but she has an incredible stage presence and powerful vocal abilities.
A video shared by both of her parents on Instagram shows Puma donning a black turtleneck top, a frilly floral skirt and red sandals, as she performed on stage at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
The teen left her audience stunned with an interpretation of “One Night Only,” a song from the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls.”
She effortlessly belted out the high notes of the song while her family hyped her up from behind the cameras.
Fans and friends alike were quick to fill Badu’s comment section with praises for her daughter.
Singer and actress Janelle Monae wrote:
“The control, the diction, the tone, the precision, the color, the choices. And the sounds of the family.”
While Taraji P. Henson from “Empire” chimed in to say: “SHE BETTER SAAAAANNNNG!!!! Proud auntie moment.”
And a fan raved:
“Beautiful. I would have been in tears! Little Sis gave me goosebumps. She wasn't even performing... she was BEING.”
LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER
It’s not the first time that Puma enthralls fans with her voice.
Last year she serenaded her mom on stage in front of a live audience, and even though she was just singing the birthday song, people were amazed at Puma's colorful and strong voice.
A few years ago, Erykah shared a pair of clips of Puma singing to Rihanna’s “Stay,” and although she was 12 at the time, it was clear for many people that the girl had a future in the music industry.
Now, it seems like she has been receiving some vocal training, and she’s ready to follow her talented mother’s steps in music.
ERYKAH'S FAMILY UNIT
Puma is Erykah’s middle child. The singer also shares son Seven with Outkast’s singer Andre 3000, and daughter Mars with rapper Jay Electronica.
Talking about their family dynamic in an interview with Hot 97’s Ebro and Rosenberg, Badu revealed that they all have a strong unit based on love and respect for each other.
“Andre - I'm like a big sister to him, and he gives me a lot of great advice,” she said of the “Hey Ya!” singer.
As for Jay Electronica, she added, “we're very close. He's very protective. He's a soldier. He wouldn't let anything happen to me or any of my kids or any of the fathers."
D.O.C and Puma are very close. “He's a nurturer,” she added. “So he nurtures all my children the same."
Badu admitted that her kids' fathers could be together at her house at any time, explaining that sometimes holidays can become a reality show with all of them together.
“They're beautiful, they're wonderful. They love and respect me. They're my friends,” she concluded.
