David Foster, 73, in 2023, and his wife, Katharine McPhee, then 38, welcomed their first child, Rennie, then 23 months old, together in 2021. However, the music producer already had parenting knowledge as he'd raised children that were now adults.

The record producer's five daughters, which he welcomed from previous relationships, were Allison, then 52; Amy, 49; Sara, 41; Erin, 40, and Jordan, 36. However, having a new baby was something David had to adjust to.

In January 2023, the television personality confessed that he loved his daughters "immeasurably," but having Rennie - his first son - was "a little bit different." Having a child at an older age was also different, with the music executive explaining that it wasn't worse or better, adding:

David met his future wife in 2006 as her guest mentor on "American Idol." The duo started with a friendship, and the television personality even served as her pianist at her first wedding.

However, from 2016 to 2017, the pair were seen at events together. In 2018, the two confirmed their relationship while attending the Met Gala, and a few months later, they were engaged before marrying the following year in London.

A few years later, the couple welcomed their bundle of joy, giving David another opportunity to raise a child. The Canadian composer felt he had something different to give to his child this time because of his older age.

What Does David Offer to His Young Son?

David confessed that it took "patience" to be a 73-year-old father to a toddler. The music arranger said the trait wasn't something he possessed when raising his daughters because he was always on the move and arrogant.

When the Grammy Award winner and his wife first announced their pregnancy, people had mixed reactions because of the difference in their ages. Some people questioned their choice, but David had his take on it, stating:

"I think that I can offer one thing to Rennie even though I won't be around when he's 50 or 40 even, or 30 maybe."

The musician also noted, "I think I can offer him wisdom from my 72 years on the planet. And maybe that's not a bad trade-off. I hope so." However, the former Verve Records chairman also made some changes to accommodate little Rennie.

What Did David Say about Fatherhood?

McPhee's husband has been quite open about being a father to a young child for almost two years since Rennie was welcomed. David confessed that it was "great" being a father again.

However, he had no regrets and loved each day he had with his adorable son. David didn't only have more time to parent, but he went out of his way to carve out chunks of space so he could see his child, with him saying:

“Even though I'm working a lot now, I'll cancel anything just to hang with him. It's just different."

The star said there was some truth to him working day and night when he was younger and not being able to see his older children. David admitted that he spent those years working on his career at the expense of his children.
