"Years ago, I had an abrupt change of family fortune, and by association, personal fortune, and got into this business out of necessity. I thought about quitting so many times, but I never had a backstop or a family to fall back on, so I simply couldn't."

Losses In Ryan's Family

Ryan experienced profound losses in his family. In 2021, he shared the sad news of his mother, Jacqueline Carlin Melcher's passing, in a heartfelt Instagram post. He marked his mom's first death anniversary the following year.

Due to a divorce he was caught up in as an underaged child, Ryan claimed he was unable to see his grandmother for a considerable period.

Ryan Was Once Estranged From His Grandmother

Ryan's grandmother, Doris Day, was a cultural legend known for her fascinating love life and contributions to television, film, and music. In May 2019, he expressed his heartfelt sentiments on Facebook following the news of his grandmother's death.

In his tribute post, Ryan admired his grandmother's multifaceted career, including her philanthropic efforts and advocacy for animal rights. Although she was a private individual, she dedicated time and energy to their family during his formative years.

However, Doris's only grandson also shared about the painful family estrangement he experienced. Due to a divorce he was caught up in as an underaged child, Ryan claimed he was unable to see his grandmother for a considerable period.

He said he was invited to dinner by Doris once, only to have her business manager, Bob Bashara, intervene and prevent the meeting from occurring. The business manager allegedly asserted that he could not see his grandma due to his parents' divorce.

But Charley Cullen Walters, who worked on Day's 2011 album "My Heart" and handled her publicity, claimed that there were attempts to reach out to Ryan, but they received no response. He said he also respected Ryan's wish to avoid being contacted about celebrity or Hollywood, as indicated on his website.

Walters then told Fox News that after Doris saw the story published, she decided to steer clear of the family's drama and alleged that Melcher didn't contact his grandmother afterward to clear the air.

“Unfortunately, this is a little bit of history repeating itself and Doris made the decision that maybe it was best to just stay out of that issue and the family issue, although there was never any mention that he wasn't allowed to see her," Walters said.
