In an interview given to the New York Times, Anthony Bourdain's mother, Gladys Bourdain, shared that she had no indication that her 61-year-old son would ever think of suicide.
She gave the interview hours after the news of Bourdain's death was confirmed. Bourdain was found dead on Friday due to an apparent suicide by hanging at the Le Chambard hotel in Kaysersberg, France, on Friday.
His longtime friend, popular chef Eric Ripert found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room. Gladys revealed that she spoke to Ripert after her son's death. She said that Bourdain was in a dark mood in the last few days of his life.
Gladys could not understand nor express the reason for her son's decision to commit suicide.
“He had everything. Success beyond his wildest dreams. Money beyond his wildest dreams.”

Bourdain was active on social media during his life. The last photo for his mother that shared via his Instagram account featured a picture of him, his brother Christoper, and Gladys.
He had captioned the black-and-white photo with a light-hearted comment about having to wear knee socks and matching shorts in his childhood.
