Marlo Thomas & Phil Donahue Show Their Timeless Love with a Romantic Throwback Photo
On Thursday, Marlo Thomas shared photographic proof that she and Phil Donahue had sailed into the sunset. Her following loved the throwback photo taken in mid-2009, one person commenting how they looked like "newlyweds."
"I love this shot! […] Phil introduced it all to me - the sea, the sunsets, and being on the water for days at a time!" Marlo Thomas captioned the image of her holding Phil Donahue tight as they smiled.
One wrote, "You both are so good together. So happy you've both found love... elusive to most." Another added, "You're so blessed to have one another."
"Y'all are the realist and most happily married couple; you keep each other young and happy; God's continued blessings sent to such a beautiful couple," commented a fan.
With 40-odd years of marriage, Thomas has a rich archive of their life together. On Valentine's Day, she posted a snap from around the seventies of them in a smiling embrace.
In March, she uploaded a snap of them on a Barbados beach that relaxes her just by looking at it. Another throwback Thursday post looked less relaxing for Donahue. His eyes widen as his wife takes her first stab at trimming his hair during the lockdown.
Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue Set out to The "Secret Sauce" of a Happy Marriage
Instead of going on a cruise or throwing a lavish party to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary, the actress and talk show host broke an "ironclad rule" of their marriage – by collaborating on a project.
The couple had their challenges.
Over nine months, they interviewed successful celebrity couples, like Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, and Viola Davis and Julius Tennon, to "find if there really is a secret sauce to a successful marriage."
These interviews, or double dates as they experience it, accumulated in a book, "What Makes a Marriage Last: 40 Celebrated Couples Share With Us the Secrets to a Happy Life," and a podcast, "Double Date."
Thomas met Donahue when she appeared on his talk show in Chicago in 1977. In the clip of that appearance, one can already see the beginnings of a spark.
Phil Donahue called her "really fascinating." She said he was generous and kind, and the woman in his life was "very lucky." The couple had their challenges. Marlo Thomas told WLS-TV in June 2021 that she never wanted to get married, yet she tied the knot with a divorced man who had custody of his four sons.
